100TH STREET PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE
Xaever Mand contributed to the project while working at Grimshaw Architects.
A pedestrian bridge at a gateway location of Downtown Edmonton. The site had extremely challenging constraints that shaped the design of the bridge. The area to the south of the road was unsuitable for major foundations due geological instability, meaning that the majority of ground work needed to take place to the north or by existing structures. The bridge also needed to ensure that it did not impinge on vehicle clearances whilst avoiding inclines that would make the structure uncomfortable to cross. For these reasons a hybrid structure, with an arched bridge deck was chosen. The Bridge deck can be considered as two sections, which are supported in two different ways: the west side of the bridge is supported by regularly spaced hanger cables which connect to a suspension cable supported by a mast to the north of the road which at the inner edge of the torsion box avoiding any significant structure under the bridge deck. The east side of the bridge is supported by a below deck underslung cable that terminates at the existing plaza.
100th Street Pedestrian Bridge was awarded the 2023 Award of Excellence for Urban Design Plans at the City of Edmonton’s Urban Design Awards.
